St James School

Governors

St James School Governing Body

The School Governors of St James carry a responsibility for overseeing school affairs on behalf of the Ted Wragg Trust and the community. The Governors are all volunteers who work with the school and other interested parties to try and help them build an inclusive and exciting learning environment for all children who attend the school.

As a member of the Ted Wragg Trust, St James’ Governing Body helps to set the ethos and strategic direction of the school, act as a ‘critical friend,’ engage in self-evaluation work, review data and help plan for the future ensuring high aspirations are maintained.   There are 16 of us who work as a team, with nine being appointed by the Ted Wragg Trust. We meet in committees and as a whole group every half term. We are responsible to parents, the Local Authority, the Department for Education and the wider community, making sure the school provides a good quality education and promotes high standards of educational achievement. Parents are essential in our team and we appreciate those who serve as parent governors.

Governors make an essential, though often unseen, contribution to the life of a school. At St James we keep strong, healthy relationships with all staff and the school’s leaders in particular, effectively ensuring that every student can exceed initial expectations in a safe, purposeful, caring environment.

If you would like to be involved in any way we are always glad to hear from you.

Mr. Andy Mulcock

Chair of Governors

The conduct of St James school is under the direction of its governing body in accordance with “The Governors Handbook″.

Gavin Wilson After doing a degree in Engineering Geology and working in Ground Investigation for a few years, I moved back to the county I grew up in and worked for an Engineering Consultancy in Exeter for 15 years. During this time, I got married, had four children and took up writing as a hobby, the latter eventually taking my life in a somewhat unexpected direction. I now work from home for an online writing and story platform as a Science Fiction specialist and volunteer co-ordinator managing several hundred people all around the world. When not sat in the corner tapping away at a keyboard I enjoy listening to music, playing guitar, walking and martial arts.
Julia Thornton    I am the staff Governor on the Governing body. I have been at St James for nine years as an English teacher and am second in department. I joined the school as an NQT as prior to teaching I worked in TV and theatre as a Stage Manager. I have been heavily involved in the extra-curricular programme at school such as school productions, Ten Tors and DofE and organising a European Comenius project. I recently qualified as a DofE expedition assessor. I think this is an incredibly important part of school life as I feel education goes far beyond the classroom.
