Initial teacher training at St James
St James views initial teacher training as a vital and important aspect of our whole school community. We work with a wide range of teacher training institutes to offer a number of different routes in to the profession.
Currently, we have trainees from the following providers:
- Exeter University PGCE
- South West Teacher Training
- Schools Direct @Exeter
- Schools Direct distance model- offered through the University of Exeter and Exeter Consortium.
All our trainees are offered a comprehensive training programme to develop both their pedagogical and theoretical understanding of teaching and learning. Within the classroom, all trainees are supported by a mentor or principle subject leader, who are outstanding practitioners in their subject, to develop classroom practice. Trainees are also provided with a bespoke training timetable to ensure they have experience of students across year groups and attainment range. The training programme encourages trainees to slowly build up their confidence through a mixture of team teaching, teaching small episode and one off lessons in the early stages of training before taking on a range of classes independently as training progresses.
To support the developing classroom practice, there is a comprehensive professional studies programme in place. Depending on the route being followed, trainees may attend the existing NQT training programme, or attend a programme put together in partnership by the University and school. Alongside this, trainees attend our own in-house CPD with school staff that will focus on key areas of teaching and learning such as AFL and developing independent learning.
We also work with Teach First and Exeter University in providing students with a preliminary teaching experience. If you would like to undertake some observation at St James please contact DJL@stjamesexeter.co.uk. It is helpful if you have a DBS in place.
