Year 8 Devon Cup Football

At the beginning of term the Year 8 football team travelled to Torquay to play against Cuthbert Mayne school in a Devon Cup game fixture which had been rearranged due to miserable weather before the Christmas break. Within the first 5 minutes you could see that the game was going to be very close as both teams were evenly matched! Not long before the first half Cuthbert broke through and scored to go 1-0 up, however, the St James boys didn’t drop their heads and knew that it was all still to play for in the second half. With a change being made of Miles Baron going from left midfield to centre forward he injected some pace into the team and was rewarded with an early goal to even up the tie. The following 5 minutes the St James boys played exceptionally well with Miles again finishing with a fantastic strike to make the score 2-1. The game became very tight near the end with both teams not wishing to give up possession, but the St James boys held their nerve and finished with the victory. Man of the Match was split between the goal scorer Miles and strike stopper Ollie Jane. The year 8 team now wait to hear who their 2nd round match will be against in the next coming weeks.

Indoor Athletics competition

On 15th January, Year 8 students travelled to St Peters to take part in a team Indoor Athletics competition. Students were able to take part in a number of track and/or field events which were amended to be completed indoors. Their results were then all added together to go towards their overall team scores. A fantastic effort shown by all with St James being rewarded with a 3rd place finished! Congratulations to all those who competed!

Devon Cross Country Championships

On Saturday 19th January 3 St James students competed in the Devon Schools Cross Country Championships which took place at Stover School. These students had qualified through two previous races to be there and were competing against the best school runners across Devon. There was a lot to play for with the top 10 qualifying through to the South West Championships at Bath, with the potential of being selected to run in the National Championships in Leeds later this year.

In the minor boys race Alastair Smith ran fantastically well in the Minor Boys , learning not to go off to fast at the beginning of the race which he had done in the past. This played off with Alastair finishing 8th and qualifying through to the next round. St James’ second runner of the day was Luke Mallon who competed in the Junior Boys race. Luke has shown massive amounts of progress over the last year showing more dedication to his running. His commitment was rewarded with a 8th place finish and again a place to run in the South West Championships. Our final runner of the day was Louis Chamberlain who was competing in the older age group this year as an Inter Boy, where he was competing against boys who are a school year older. Louis paced himself well and worked his way through the field over the 3 lapped circuit and finished in 11th place which he should be extremely proud of.

Congratulations to all 3 runners to represented themselves and the school so well. News to follow on the next round, the South West Championships.
