The Year 8 boys Rugby had their first outing of the season on Wednesday when they took part in the TWMAT Rugby tournament at Isca. After 7 weeks of training, the players were excited, but also a little nervous about the opening game, but captain Jack Christie showed his leadership skills in getting the boys in the right frame of mind. The opening exchanges were played a very high tempo and it took a while for St James to find their feet. Oliver Skidmore and Jack Rawlins were working hard off the ball and some big defensive hits from Jack, Dan Wright and Zack Janaddi helped to stem the flow of attack from Isca, and this enabled Alex Szott to eventually race clear showing tremendous pace and power. Debutant Albert cooper made a positive impact with strong carrying, and St James were able to create an opening for the impressive Jacob Hay-Laing (playing up a year group) to burst clear and dot down for a five-pointer. The whole group really pulled together to hold Isca at bay and win 10-0, which was followed up with a 5-5 draw against a tough West Exe team with Szott again fining the try line. The whole squad played a strong part in these displays but special mention must go to Will Wright, Matrynas Ramanauskas and Albert Cooper, who all played in their first ever game of Rugby, and showed resilience and determination throughout. Well done everyone! Mr Chalmers
