St James sustain its track record of exceptional GCSE results with a record number of A & A* grades awarded
With a headline figure of 57% of students achieving 5 A* – C including English & Maths, and a record number of A and A* grades awarded, St James has maintained the high level of achievement set in previous years, exceeding its nationally set target for the fourth year running by over 11%.
“At St James we work with all students to achieve their best, whatever their starting point,” explains Head of School, Tim Rutherford. “We set aspirational targets from year 7 that we work towards together to ensure that students make the best possible progress during their five years with us; an approach that produces superb results. This year 75% of students made 3 levels of progress in English, with 77% making 3 levels of progress in Maths. These results are significantly above our government set and benchmarked targets, however, we aim high and look for our students to make 4 levels of progress. This year 35% did in English and 30% did in Maths, with 6% and 10% respectively making 5 levels.
“For the second year running we have achieved a record number of A* and A grades. Over 32% of students have achieved 5 or more A*-B grades which is fantastic. Individual successes include Ruari Mold and Lewis Coombes 12 A*/A, Owen Jones, Shahida Hassan and Jade Yardley 11 A*/A, Dixie Jordan 8 A*/A, Joshua Riglar 6 A*/A, Zeneb Razzouk El-Attrach, Matthew Williamson and Zoe Martin 5 A*/A, Farah Alamer and Sonia Schmid 4 A*/A. Individual subjects have also produced an exceptional level of A & A* grades, including Computing 27%, English Literature 21%, Chemistry 19%, French & Religious Studies 17% and English Language & Mathematics 16%, which have contributed to a headline figure of 13% of all grades awarded to St James’ students being A* & A.
“At St James we are determined that all students achieve success regardless of their ability or background and across all subjects. This year 100% of our cohort achieved 5 A*-G qualifications and 50% of students entered achieved the EBacc qualification, an increase of 10% on last year. This increase was due to a significant improvement in Modern Foreign Languages results, with 66% of students achieving A*-C. A*-C success is evident across the whole curriculum with departments securing some excellent results, including Computing 100%, iArt 92%, English Literature 90%, English Language 88%, Biology 86%, Chemistry 83%, Physics 81% and Food Technology 76%. Students also achieved 100% in BTec Public Services, Health & Social Care, Engineering, Sport and TLM IT Users.
Tim Rutherford, Head of School, is incredibly proud of his students’ achievements. “Staff and students at St James have very high expectations and work incredibly hard, relentlessly focusing on the best possible outcomes, so I am really pleased and immensely proud that they have achieved such excellent results that reflect their unwavering effort, commitment and determination. With this attitude and these results, I look forward to watching the very positive futures that lie ahead of them. For the second year running we have 100% of students enrolled in full time courses at college or in apprenticeships and employment so I am confident that their achievement will continue.”
